Apple's new 27-Inch Thunderbolt display is, for the most part, really not a new display. It is a very similar as the older 27" LED Cinema Display, except it now includes Apple's Thunderbolt technology.
Still, that may not be a trival new feature. After all, the pr announcements say Thunderbolt may be the coolest connection ever invented, so perhaps this device is worth a close look.
Apple's new Thunderbolt display might not offer a lot with regards to new display panel technology, but that does not mean it is behind the periods or low in quality. Besides simply being big, it offers everything that most users could possibly want. LED backlighting allows for more precise lighting control, lower energy use, and better black level reproduction. Meanwhile, IPS display technology permits vivid colors and wide viewing angles. And just to add some extra sprinkes of awesome, the resolution is 2560x1440.
Though Apple has dropped the "Cinema Display" brand name from this new service, it could still apply. This is a monitor that's geared towards the enjoyment of multimedia content like movies, photos as well as video games. The use of high-gloss glass rather than a matte surface is evidence of that. It ends in more glare, but also drastically increases contrast. Images seem to have real "pop" and do not suffer from grainy details if viewed closely.

MacBook Airs, as an example, do not have Ethernet available at the same time an option, but sometimes use an Ethernet connection via this display.
What's lacking is, of course, HDMI and DVI. The insufficient USB 3.0 ports is a downer, though many competitors haven't yet offer USB 3.0 too. The connections entirely on the Thunderbolt display is sensible if you are connecting it to your Mac, but when you aren't, it'll seem rather limited.
The speakers for this display can be a 2.1 system which gives reasonably adequate sound. However, like every single built-in monitor head unit ever made, the lack of proper sound staging limits enjoyment. Many external speaker options under $100 provides better audio quality, and you'll want to purchase a real solution if you do not almost never listen to music, watch movies online or play games. If you don't watch free movies online or play games though, you probably wouldn't be buying this monitor.
To enable FaceTime, a microphone as well as a webcam are included. The webcam quality is much better than most built-in monitor webcams and even many inexpensive stand-alone webcams. Microphone quality is adequate for FaceTime and web calls, but isn't a option for recording a podcast.
Although the display's large stand is stable and classy, it only tilts slightly, and there is no height, swivel or pivot adjustment. There's no question the Thunderbolt display, like the previous 27" LED Cinema Display, offers a top-notch viewing experience. Apple hasn't skimped on display technology, although the glossy glass panel could possibly be annoying in bright rooms, it gives you jaw-dropping visuals in ideal lighting.
It's unfortunate, then, the display is average by another measure. Limited connectivity and a lack of ergnomic adjustments are major dings against any monitor priced above $400, nevermind built to be just a buck shy of $1000. If you wait for a sale, you may choose to grab a 30-Inch Dell Ultrasharp for similar dough.
Given the poor value, you will never rate this product as anything superior to average inspite of the excellent image quality.
