Big oil company propaganda which has a heart! Just the free movie we need for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one in the most lyrical American films ever made. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation within the United States National Film Registry through the Library of Congress to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of the Cajun boy and his family, living on the bayous in a way of life that individuals can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land to the oil company, which comes in, drills, leaving everything just like it was, clean and unspoiled except that the family features a little more money. (Yes, it absolutely was funded through the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends nearly all of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating over the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, with his pet raccoon. He never wears a life preserver or shoes... doesn't also have a cell phone to get in touch with case he gets having problems. There is not much story, just a celebration (such stunning grayscale photography that you might well wonder what are the big deal is about color) of a way of life that is certainly no longer around.
All from the actors were amateurs, and then for most, this became their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. Boudreaux, who literally boy, was surviving in a FEMA trailer regarding his wife of fifty-five years, after Hurricane Rita destroyed their house. (source). He had a chance at fame in the movies, but he stayed where he was from and apparently knew growing up an appreciation of family (a relationship of over five decades) reflects why I consider The Louisiana Story an appropriate free movie for one of our most family-friendly holidays.

First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever produced. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died believing that the last copy have been destroyed. In a bit of weirdness that sounds a lot more like a movie than the truth, an almost complete print is discovered in 1981 in the janitor's closet of an Norwegian mental institution.
Finally, I am grateful that we can watch this magnificent film, on many lists with the greatest films in recent history, for free online at Gloria.tv, a Roman Catholic video site.
Maria Falconetti (more), who plays Joan, suffered a psychological breakdown in the making with this film, and she never made another film. Pauline Kael (more), a notoriously demanding film critic, asserted Falconetti's performance "may function as the finest performance ever documented on film."
